Narcissistic, Borderline, and Psychopathic Personality Types in Addiction Treatment: A Psychodynamic Understanding presented by Evan Miller, PhD

Narcissistic. Borderline. Psychopathic. Each of these names elicit a charged affective response. This presentation will undertake a deep understanding of these personality types as they each pertain to the attachment disordered client.

As a large portion of attachment treatment utilizes a cognitive- behavioral approach for case conceptualization, this presentation will do something different and offer a depth psychological psychodynamic understanding of attachment behavior. According to depth psychology, it is the emotional content of the psyche which drives, stalls, impedes, and accelerates human behavior - we are emotional creatures first.

As such, key attention will be given to defensive structure and pattern recognition as important components for case conceptualization, thus ushering in a deeper and evidence-based understanding of our clients' motivations, both conscious and unconscious. In the end, it is the presenter's hope that after this presentation the audience will not only have a more compassionate and deeper understanding of their client's attachment issues, but also realize these same primitive capacities and impulses in themselves.
